Sodium azide is very toxic, the symptoms are similar to those that occur with cyanide poisoning. Large doses can be fatal. Sodium azide solutions should be considered hazardous and, if unnecessary, neutralized with oxidizing agents. Avoid exposure of sodium azide solutions to acids, as this leads to the release of volatile, toxic and explosive hydrazoic acid. Cases of explosions when draining an azide solution into the sewer are described, due to the formation of copper azide (a dangerous explosive) and azides of other heavy metals (in particular, iron and lead). A case of explosion of a system consisting of an aqueous solution of sodium azide and a layer of dichloromethane (possibly due to the formation of diazidomethane) is described.
